======Installation Guide====== WARNING: If you make a mistake installing this software, it is possible to permanently disable your router, effectively turning it into a brightly colored brick. Bricked routers aren't very useful -- you can use one to beat someone about the head or as modern art, but that's about it. You can pretty much eliminate this risk by following the directions given here so please read them first before attempting to install Gargoyle. Gargoyle is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. The author(s) of Gargoyle assume ZERO liability for any damage caused by this software. \\ \\ :!: **Check** that your Router Hardware meets the minimum requirements. ===== Install a Gargoyle Image ===== The recommended way to install Gargoyle is to Download __the correct__ Gargoyle factory.bin image to your PC and then install the image onto your router using the original manufacturers GUI. :!: Check the __exact version__ of your router hardware __carefully__ before selecting the download. Gargoyle images are available for many routers. :-? If you get the **error message "please choose a file to upgrade"**, then rename the firmware file to something shorter (i.e. "gargoyle.bin") and upload it again. * Wait about 5 minutes then you should be able to connect to 192.168.1.1 * If after 5 minutes 192.168.1.1 is unresponsive first reboot your PC and try again. * If after 20 minutes 192.168.1.1 is unresponsive you may reboot both PC and router. Installation instructions are available for several models: * TP-Link Routers * Linksys WRT54GL, WRTSL54GS * Linksys WRT54G-TM * Asus WL500G Premium (V1 & V2) * La Fonera * D-Link DIR-300 * Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH * Ubiquiti RouterStation Pro * x86 Based Routers * Other Routers ===== Connecting to a Gargoyle Image ===== To get started you will need a **wired connection** from a PC to a **LAN port** on the Gargoyle router: * browse to 192.168.1.1 and enter the default "password". * ssh root@192.168.1.1 with the default "password". OpenWrt defaults to having no root password and telnet is available. Telnet is not available on Gargoyle installed from an image. ===== Migrating from OpenWRT ===== FIXME Can you flash directly to Gargoyle from an OpenWRT install?? It **may** be possible to install OpenWrt Kamikaze and then install Gargoyle as a set of packages on top of it. Gargoyle is now based on Backfire and theoretically installing as a set of packages should work, but it possible it may not. ===== Migrating from DD-WRT ===== Attempts to load a Gargoyle image directly from the DD-WRT GUI have been **unsuccessful**. However, downloads are available to revert from DD-WRT to Stock Factory firmware, and from there a Gargoyle image may be loaded. ===== More Information ===== If you find the documentation here insufficient there are several other resources on installing OpenWrt you may find helpful.
